How to read this page. It is written so you can check it: every claim about evidence hangs from a reference with its PubMed identifier, and we state just as plainly what is known and what is not. You will not find dosages or protocols anywhere on this site.

The ground it plays on

Hormones work in axes: a signal from the brain tells a gland to release another hormone, and so on down the chain, with brakes that shut the process off. Intervening at one point has consequences both upstream and downstream. That is why this is the group where professional assessment stops being a recommendation and becomes essential.

What it is studied for

Pigmentation, libido.

There is a distinction that almost always gets lost. A compound being studied for something is not the same as achieving it. And even where it works in a dish or in a mouse, that says little about whether it works in a person or whether the benefit is worth the risk. The section below therefore carries more weight than everything above it.

What the human evidence says

In people there is a phase I pilot study (Life Sciences, 1996) and two small double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trials on erection in men with erectile dysfunction (Journal of Urology, 1998; Urology, 2000). The rest are case reports of adverse effects in people who took it on their own.

The limitation that matters most

There were no phase 3 trials or long-term safety studies, because clinical development continued with PT-141 (Bremelanotide). It remains to be clarified what role the peptide, ultraviolet exposure, and product quality each play in the published cases of melanoma and eruptive moles; the priapism cases are explained by its central action.

Regulatory status

Not approved in any country. In the United States it was in the FDA's Category 2 for pharmacy compounding and, on the page current as of April 2026, it appears among the withdrawn nominations. WADA does not name it on its list; because it has no approval it falls under section S0, prohibited at all times in sport.

Status can change and varies by country. Always verify the rules in force where you live before drawing conclusions.

Cautions and context

It can darken moles and freckles and bring out new moles, so it calls for baseline dermoscopic mole mapping and dermatologic monitoring. It can also cause nausea, flushing, a rise in blood pressure and, in men, a prolonged erection, which is an emergency.

With a history of melanoma, atypical moles, high blood pressure, or priapism, dermatologic and medical assessment comes before starting.

This is not medical advice. Any decision about a compound in this encyclopedia belongs to a healthcare professional who knows your history, what you already take and your specific situation. If something you are using produces a new symptom, that is not something to observe — it is something to consult.

What this page cannot give you

A reference page can take you this far. You know what Melanotan II is and where its research stands, which already puts you ahead of most readers. Four questions remain that no encyclopedia can answer for you, because the answers depend on your own situation:

That is what the course is for

PeptiXtreme is ${CIF.LECCIONES} lessons that hand out no numbers. Each one ends with your starting point, what to watch along the way, the specific questions you take to a professional and the signals that mean stop. It includes per-module exams, a Certificate of Completion with a verifiable certificate ID, a Progress Tracker to follow how you are doing, and a human advisor you can actually write to.

Frequently asked questions

What is Melanotan II?

A peptide studied for its relationship with melanocortin pathways, associated with skin pigmentation and desire response. It is a cyclic analog of alpha-MSH that activates the MC1, MC3, MC4, and MC5 receptors. It is studied within the area of hormonal/sexual.

Is there human evidence for Melanotan II?

In people there is a phase I pilot study (Life Sciences, 1996) and two small double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trials on erection in men with erectile dysfunction (Journal of Urology, 1998; Urology, 2000). The rest are case reports of adverse effects in people who took it on their own.

Is it approved by any health agency?

Not approved in any country. In the United States it was in the FDA's Category 2 for pharmacy compounding and, on the page current as of April 2026, it appears among the withdrawn nominations. WADA does not name it on its list; because it has no approval it falls under section S0, prohibited at all times in sport.

What is the dose of Melanotan II?

We do not publish dosages. This is not an oversight. No single figure works for everyone: the regimen depends on a person's medical history, on whatever medication they already take, and on the goal they are chasing, which is something a professional weighs with the case in front of them. What you can build is the ability to walk into that appointment knowing what to ask.

Where can I learn to evaluate this properly?

This page tells you what Melanotan II is and what the evidence says. The PeptiXtreme course teaches the other half: what you would measure before considering anything, what you would watch, the specific questions you would take to a professional and when you would stop.
