The ground it plays on
The immune system is not something you turn "up" or "down": it is regulated. A compound that raised the response without control would be a problem, not a benefit, which is why the correct word is modulation. For people with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, this stops being a technical nuance.
What it is studied for
Advertised for immune modulation.
There is a distinction that almost always gets lost. A compound being studied for something is not the same as achieving it. And even where it works in a dish or in a mouse, that says little about whether it works in a person or whether the benefit is worth the risk. What the human evidence says
It comes closest to having clinical data of anything in the Russian group: there is a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study in elderly patients before abdominal cancer surgery, published in Russian in 2011. It is small, single-centre and has never been replicated outside Russia.
The limitation that matters most
Although it does have a real randomised trial, it was published with an English abstract only, with no public protocol registration, no accessible primary data and no independent replication. The bulk of the recent literature consists of hepatoprotection studies in rats.

Registered as an immunomodulator in Russia. Not approved by the FDA or the EMA.
